The Fast

Today, I began a 10 fast. It consists of drinking only water and herbal teas during the day. After 8 p.m. I will drink a fresh juice. I chose to eat a few nuts (almonds, peanuts, Brazil nuts, cashews etc) just so that I wouldn’t be dramatically plunging into the cleanse.

Why 10 days ?

I woke up fairly early around 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. and felt completely charged. I began to Google “Yoga Classes” near my hometown. My goal was to find a location close to my home, affordable and diverse in its class types. After sifting through various Groupon and Living Social specials I found one. The Yoga Shelter has various locations all of which are relatively close to my house or near places I visit often. This place also has a 10 classes for $10 special. This excited me even more. Eventually it just clicked, “Sheheriana, you should fast.” Well for how long? I asked myself. The number 10 continued to pop up. It is the date, the number of classes I’ll begin with and essentially a number which represents completion. Ten is simply one and zero. Zero begin void, which represents a clean slate. One being whole, the essence of my spiritual and psychological being while fasting.

As to be expected I was a little shaky. My head began to hurt around 1:00 p.m. All morning I could feel my stomach cramping from the hunger. Though I didn’t let it bother me too much. The need to eat was replaced with thirst. I drank endless cups of jasmine green tea and water. Auspiciously I signed up for a “slow flow” yoga class at 6:00 p.m. This was perfect because honestly anything more advanced would have wreaked havoc on my body. During the hour long session I seriously channeled my inner goddess energy. There were times when my head became so light I thought I had made a mistake. Then there were those moments of deep concentration and strength. It was my first class and of course I felt self-conscious. Soon the instructor’s great energy and commentary eased me through it. I found an inner light which resonated through my skin. I was able to push myself when I felt weak. While lying in the happy baby pose, hips spread with my ankles in the air I truly realized the meaning of this pose. How joyous and free I felt. I drove home and bathed. Finally, it was time for the juice. I mixed the following:

7 Strawberries

1/2 Lemon

2 Carrots

1/2 Apple

Now, I’m going to enjoy a cup of Tulsi tea (Holy Basil), read a book and rest.
